Description
Short description:
Biochar is a very high carbon material produced from the pyrolysis of a biomass feedstock, trapping the carbon contained in the feedstock in a safe and stable manner. Biochar is the ultimate soil amendment and a game-changer for achieving healthier and higher performing plants. Renergi’s biochar has been developed using our own patented technology to achieve a particle size, high surface area and porosity that optimises moisture and nutrient holding capacity and slow-release while maximising microbial life and providing protection from potential contaminants. Best of all, the benefits intensify over time, making it the single best tool for improving health and fertility for a thriving ‘living soil’!
Renergi’s biochar contributes to urgently needed atmospheric carbon removal, essentially taking carbon from the sky and storing it stably in your soil. So by using it, you are playing a key part in tackling climate change.
Key Properties & Benefits:
Renergi’s groundbreaking patented ‘grinding pyrolysis’ technology produces a superior micron-sized particle sizes strikingly similar to natural biochar like that found in the famous Amazonian ‘Terra Preta’ soils. Only highly consistent and stable agricultural and forestry waste residue feedstocks are used to ensure a biochar that is soil safe, highly effective, and highly sustainable.
Enhances Moisture Retention
Able to hold 2-3x its weight, it drastically improves water holding capacity
Improves Soil Fertility
Enhances nutrient density and availability
Regulates Soil pH
Depending on application, biochar acts as a liming agent, reducing soil acidity & improving conditions for plant growth.
Boosts Soil Microbiota
Biochar supports beneficial soil microorganisms, which play a crucial role in nutrient cycling & plant health
Reduces Fertiliser Requirements
Biochar’s high surface area & porous structure reduces nutrient runoff & the overall need for fertiliser application.
Mitigates Soil Pollution
Helps reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals & other pollutants in the soil.
Carbon Sequestration
Biochar removes excess atmospheric CO2 by adding stable pure carbon to the soil for 1000’s of years
Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions
As well as the sequestration of excess CO2, biochar application decreases the emissions of nitrous oxide (N₂O) & methane (CH₄) from soils

Applications:
Renergi’s biochar can be used in a diverse number of ways and is ideal whether at small applications such as the household garden or for large-scale commercial operations where it is ready made to be suitable for a wide range of agriculture applicators, from spreaders to boomsprays and can be ‘pre-charged’ with customised nutrient needs upon request.
Usage guidance:
General application and usage amount guidance:
⦁ It can be applied directly in soil, mixed into compost, or, with time, converted to a slurry or liquid.
⦁ It is highly recommended to pre-activate (also referred as ‘quenching’ and ‘charging’) the biochar with a liquid nutrient of your choice (such as wood vinegar, other biologicals, or conventional liquid fertilisers) before application to ensure there is no settling-in time (where the biochar can first ‘pull in’ existing nutrients in the soil). This is less crucial for pot applications.
⦁ Always water after application but avoid ‘overwatering or soaking’, particularly for applications where run off can occur.
⦁ If creating a slurry or liquid, apply water/liquid nutrients gradually to the biochar rather than try to mix into the liquid (biochar is very porous and is initially hydrophobic, meaning it will take time for it to adjust and absorb liquid).
Pots: Apply a third of the way up in the pot at roughly 10-15% of the required soil/pot volume.
General soil & Larger Garden Beds:
Large Trees/established plants: Depending on plant size, apply at between 6-10 litres at depth of between 50-250mm (or as reasonably close to the root zone as you can practically get to). For Planting: apply to the base of the hole at a rate of roughly 10-15% of the soil volume required to fill the hole. Water generously.
Seedlings: Apply 2-3 small handfuls as the base of the hole.
Lawns:
For new lawns, mix into a compost or lawn base mix at approx 10-15% of the volume, or apply to the soil at a depth of 40-60mm at 6-8 litres per square metre.
For Established lawns, lightly rake-in/spread 4-5 litres per square metre and water generously, avoiding soaking any one area. Or if applying as a liquid, spray-in evenly.
